  1. INTERCEPT RAID ON SCHWEINFURT

  3. On August 17, 1943, the Eighth Air Force
  4. targeted the town of Schweinfurt, home
  5. to more than fifty percent of the ball-
  6. bearing manufacturing in Germany.  The
  7. U.S. high command hoped that the destruc-
  8. tion of these factories would seriously
  9. hamper the German industrial war effort.
  10. This mission was also a test of General
  11. Eaker's belief that the heavily armed
  12. B-17s could survive without fighter
  13. escort.  During the flight to and from
  14. Schweinfurt the Fortresses ran a gaunt-
  15. let of enemy fighters, exacting a heavy
  16. toll.  This raid combined with the effort
  17. against Regensburg on the same day cost
  18. the Eighth Air Force 60 B-17s and 600
  19. crewmen lost.  These fearsome losses
  20. inflicted by the Luftwaffe fighter arm
  21. began to shake the confidence the Amer-
  22. icans had in their bomber offensive.

  26. You and your wingman are perfectly posi-
  27. tioned to attack a squadron of B-17s near
  28. Schweinfurt whose escort of P-47s has long
  29. since headed for home.  Your best strategy
  30. for attacking this tight formation of B-17s
  31. is to work at the outer edges of the forma-
  32. tion first, avoiding the concentration of
  33. fire from the gunners in the center.  Be
  34. patient and slowly pick off the least
  35. defended planes in the formation.
